Description

This tour through the medieval heart of Pontevedra begins in the Alameda, an iconic space that serves as an introduction to understanding the city's urban evolution. The first stop is at the Ruins of Santo Domingo, whose Gothic remains allow us to analyze the key role of religious orders in the town's social and architectural structure. After passing by the sculptural ensemble of El Fiel Contraste, the route continues to the Teatro Principal and the Liceo Casino, a building that now stands on the site of a former Romanesque church. The itinerary then takes you to Plaza del Teucro, a spot surrounded by heraldic shields where the city's mythical origin linked to the Trojan War is revealed. Next, the tour reaches Plaza de la Peregrina, famous for its unique church with a scallop-shaped floor plan and for the story of the charismatic parrot Ravachol. In the adjacent Plaza de la Herrería, you'll delve into the identity of the 'Boa Vila,' exploring the daily life of the old guilds and the majesty of the Convent of San Francisco. The experience continues through the picturesque Plaza de la Leña and the Baroque Church of San Bartolomé, which has a curious and unique history. After crossing Plaza de la Verdura, the birthplace of one of the city's most spectacular festivals, and paying tribute to the figure of Valle-Inclán, the tour reaches the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor. This church is key to discovering Pontevedra's prosperous seafaring past and its economic importance in centuries gone by. The sightseeing tour ends in Plaza Alonso de Fonseca, a square that holds beneath its surface the remains of the old archiepiscopal towers, witnesses to one of the most significant chapters in the history of Galicia.
