Eugenio Granell Foundation
Galicia
Eugenio Granell was a prolific surrealist painter born in La Coruña. During his life he has lived all over the world in a number of destinations and has taken his inspiration from the different cultures. Originally, he trained as a violinist and had ambitions of being a famous musician. However, whilst living in exile in the Dominican Republic after the civil war, he started painting. With his need to experience different cultures, he then moved on to Guatemala, Puerto Rico, New York and then settled to live in Madrid.
The museum is in honour of his work, and displays a collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and collages, as well as items he collected on his travels, all supplemented by artistic work by his peers.
The foundation not only exhibits art work. There are also concerts, film series, poetry readings, lectures, reading marathons and workshops for students in theatre and art. In addition to this there is also a Grannel theatre in which they perform plays related to Granell's work and their interpretations of it. The large and spacious library is ideal for researching Granell and other artists as well as simply a quiet and relaxing space to read.
