From Lugo: Half-day excursion to the Viladonga Hillfort

Explore the Viladonga Hillfort, a well-preserved pre-Roman settlement dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries near Lugo. The castrexos, the region’s original inhabitants before Roman arrival, lived here. Later Roman occupation transformed the settlement’s structure and urban layout.

You can visit almost the entire site, including house foundations, streets, defensive walls, and public buildings. The accompanying Castro Museum offers detailed explanations to enhance your visit.

Approximately 15 km north of the hillfort, near Meira, visit Lagoa de Fonmiñá, a karst-origin lagoon fed by groundwater. This lagoon marks the beginning of the Miño River journey. Here, you can walk around the lagoon and see the sculpture dedicated to the Galician hero Breogán by Magín Picallo and Manuel Mallo.

The Miño River source lies about 10 km upstream in Pedregal de Irimia, a glacial moraine where groundwater surfaces through stone formations. This site is surrounded by local legends concerning the river’s origins.

The Miño River then travels approximately 350 km across Galicia, passing cities such as Lugo and Ourense, and through landscapes like the Ribeira Sacra with its vineyards and monasteries. Its final 40 km serve as a natural border between Galicia and Portugal.
