Description
Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG) is a protected area spanning approximately 70,000 hectares in northern Portugal, bordering Galicia, Spain. It includes the Terras do Bouro, Melgaço, Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca, and Montalegre regions. Along with the Spanish Baixa-Limia park, it forms the cross-border Gerês-Xurés park, recognized by UNESCO in 2009 for its biodiversity.
The park comprises four mountain ranges—Peneda, Amarela, Soajo, and Gerês—and is traversed by the Lima and Cávado rivers. Over 500 historical and archaeological sites can be found here, including the Roman Geira path and milestones once used by legionnaires traveling between Bracara Augusta and Astorica Augusta.
