Description
The tour starts at Plaza de Platerías, featuring the Fountain of the Horses, which symbolizes the founding origins of Santiago. Opposite the fountain stands the 12th-century Romanesque portico of Paradise, reconstructed after the fire of 1117 with sculptures from various parts of the cathedral, creating a unique architectural ensemble.
Next, the itinerary ascends to the Quintana, a square historically divided into the 'Dead' and the 'Living' sections, formerly a burial site until the late 18th century. The Holy Door, located here, is a symbolic cathedral entrance opened only on the eve of the Holy Year. Nearby, the Monastery of San Paio de Antealtares provides insight into the monastic community's relationship with the cathedral.
The tour continues around the cathedral's apse to Plaza de Azabachería, where the 18th-century neoclassical façade replaced the original Romanesque Francigena façade, reflecting changes over the centuries. Opposite this square is the large Benedictine monastery of San Martín Pinario, used to explain the impact of the 19th-century Spanish Confiscation on monastic communities.
The final stop is Plaza del Obradoiro, a space representing four key powers shaping Santiago: spiritual, civil, hospital, and university. The baroque cathedral façade faces the plaza, designed to impress pilgrims arriving after the Camino. Flanking the plaza are the Pazo de Raxoi, reflecting civil authority and administration; the former Hospital Real, which has welcomed travelers since the 16th century; and the Colegio de San Xerome, marking the university's intellectual heritage.
