Description
Ourense Cathedral dates from the late 12th to early 13th century, possibly built over an earlier Suevian basilica dedicated to San Martín de Tours. It has been a national monument since 1931 and holds the title of Basilica since 1887. The cathedral reflects a blend of transitional Romanesque and Gothic styles with Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical influences visible throughout its structure.
The cathedral’s layout features a Latin cross plan with three naves supported by cruciform pillars. Visitors can admire the combination of bent and pointed arches that enhance its architectural design. The High Altar, consecrated in 1180, remains a central focal point for its detailed craftsmanship and spiritual significance.
Between 1499 and 1505, the remarkable dome was added, completing the cathedral’s distinctive silhouette. Visitors can explore independently at their own pace, absorbing the history embedded in every corner of this monumental site. After your visit, consider exploring the town of Ourense or spending time in a nearby quiet spot.
