Description
This tour begins in the Alameda, Santiago’s large 19th-century historic park, where you will learn about its origin and evolution with modernity. The route then enters the Old Town, featuring medieval streets and houses spanning various eras, each revealing their owners’ stories through architectural details.
Walking along Rúa do Vilar, you’ll discover unique features like “ceiling peepholes” and learn to identify coats of arms, inscriptions, and stone symbols that explain the influence of the Cabildo, the University, and monasteries on the city’s development.
On the south façade of the Romanesque Platerías, you will interpret its sculptural program as a complex historical puzzle. The tour continues at the Pazo de Fonseca, the birthplace of the University, where you will visit the cloister and, when available, view select exhibits.
The tour concludes at Plaza del Obradoiro, surrounded by four landmark buildings critical to understanding Santiago: the Baroque Cathedral, the Neoclassical City Hall, the former Hostel of the Catholic Monarchs, and the Rectorate with its Romanesque portal. From here, you will also view San Martín Pinario to learn about 19th-century church property confiscation and monastic heritage transformation.
